From Bald Knob to the MST in Shingletown Gap

The Shingletown Gap area is a popular place for hiking, biking, or just going for a stroll. Most users of this trail system access the trailhead located off of route PA45, just south of the town of Shingletown. There is an alternate trailhead for access to this area, and it is located off of Laurel Run Road, accessed via Galbraith Gap and the Rothrock State Forest. A recent after work outing took us to this trailhead for a hike to the top of Bald Knob.

Hiking Long Mountain Trail Over Grass Mountain

There is a trail that connects Penn Roosevelt State Park to the Alan Seeger Natural Area via a route over Grass Mountain. Curiously enough, this trail is not called Grass Mountain Trail but is called Long Mountain Trail. Long Mountain runs from Muttersbaugh Gap, about 3 miles east of Penn Roosevelt and ends near Poe Paddy State Park. My guess is that this is the only remaining section of what was once a longer trail, one that actually traversed Long Mountain. Read all about this hike as we check out this mysteriously named trail.

Viewing the Falls on Bohen Run Trail

During Pennsylvania Hiking Week a friend and I decided to do a short day hike. Not really knowing where we wanted to hike, we decided to head up to the Pine Creek area in Lycoming and Tioga counties. It seems that the road took us to the small town of Blackwell where we decided to take a short hike up the old Mid State Trail. Now called the the Bohen Trail, this short hike allowed us to take in the views of Pine Creek as well as see the impressive Bohen Run Falls.

National Trails Day June 6th

American Hiking Society's signature trail awareness program, National Trails Day (NTD), inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to seek out their favorite trails to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects.

NTD also provides an opportunity to thank volunteers, land managing agencies, and outdoor-minded businesses for their support in developing and maintaining trails. Visit the American Hiking Society's website to see what events are planned near you.

The Mid State Trail Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Mid State Trail. To commemorate this event, the Mid State Trail Association is sponsoring a party in honor of the trail. All are invited to join the MSTA for this mixer and to share your experiences on Pennsylvania's wildest footpath.

The 40th Anniversary party for the Mid State Trail will be held on Sunday, July 12th, 2009 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. The party will be held at the Elk Creek Café + Aleworks located in downtown Millheim, PA. Mark your calendars and prepare to join in the celebrations. Good times and memories will be shared with all. You'll also be one of the first to try the new Mid State Trail Ale.
